- Week 1 ·
Register at the padrón (empadronament)
Registering as a Barcelona resident opens the door to the health card and other paperwork, and you do not need regular residency to do it. Do it online, at a Citizen Advice Office (OAC) or by calling 010; bring your ID and proof of your home.
- Weeks 1–2 ·
NIE or TIE
Book on the official appointment platform and pick the exact procedure: NIE assignment, TIE fingerprints or TIE collection. Services that sell appointment "help" are private, not official.
Barcelona International Welcome, TIE · Cita previa de extranjería
- Weeks 2–3 ·
Social Security number
You need it before you start work. Apply with form TA.1 online or at the Treasury office; if you have a contract, your employer can do it with you.
- Weeks 2–3 ·
Health card (TSI)
The TSI gives you access to Catalonia's public healthcare (CatSalut). You must be registered at the padrón first; the first request can be made on Tràmits Gencat.
- Week 3 ·
Transport: T-usual or T-casual
Tickets are loaded on a T-mobilitat card. T-usual is personal and unlimited for 30 days; T-casual is a 10-journey ticket. Check prices and zones on the ATM website before you buy.
- Weeks 3–4 ·
Your first plan to meet people
Look at your district civic centre: workshops, reading clubs, sport and open activities that are easy to join alone. Or go to one of the events below.
Rules change: always confirm on the official page before you go.
