Jonathan and the Jest: a walk with Swift, St Patrick's Cathedral

St Patrick's Cathedral

Part of the Jonathan Swift Festival, this is a guided walk through St Patrick's Cathedral and Marsh's Library combined with a theatrical encounter in which Swift himself steps into the present. Expect sharp humour, wordplay and commentary that reveal the man behind the satire, for adults, young adults and anyone who loves literature. There are two performances on Saturday 28 November, at 1.30pm and 3.30pm; choose your time when booking. Tickets €18. Allow about an hour and a quarter. «Jonathan Swift Festival: Jonathan and the Jest» Starts 13:30, ends about 14:45. Source: Fáilte Ireland open data (CC BY 4.0) and the venue's own listing.

Lark After Dark: Nosferatu (1922) on the big screen, Balbriggan

The Lark Concert Hall

On Halloween night The Lark, an arts venue in Balbriggan on the coast north of Dublin, screens F. W. Murnau's silent classic Nosferatu (1922) as part of its Lark After Dark: Home of Halloween programme. The film is an unofficial adaptation of Dracula, and its vampire is a figure of disease and hunger rather than a charming aristocrat. The venue lists the screening for 19:00 with tickets at €10 including fees, and the film runs about an hour and a half. Seeing a hundred-year-old horror film with a roomful of strangers in the dark is a very easy thing to do on your own, and the same venue shows other horror classics earlier and later that night. «Lark After Dark: Nosferatu (1922)» Starts 19:00, ends about 20:40. First time?

How to join a book club alone

  1. Check the book, then relax. Many groups welcome people who have not finished it — the official page says if reading ahead matters.
  2. Arrive five minutes early and tell the host it is your first time; they will introduce you.
  3. Say one thing — a line you liked or a question. That is enough for a first evening.
  4. Nothing that suits you? Host a silent reading night: 60 minutes silent, 15 minutes talk, phones away, any book, finish at a café.
