Race format

8 runs, 8 stations: the standard Open distances

Run 1 km, do one station, repeat eight times: 8 km of running and 8 stations, always in this order. Distances are the same in every division; weights differ. Source: hyrox.com/the-fitness-race and the 26/27 Doubles and Single rulebooks, checked 2026-10-19. Sleds are listed as 4 × 12.5 m in the rulebooks and 2 × 25 m on the web page: 50 m either way. Weights are for the sleds including the sled.

Doubles: official page wording is "Find a partner and take on HYROX as a pair; running together but splitting each workout station as you choose." The rulebook adds that both partners run every 1,000 m together and enter and leave each station together. Doubles divisions use the same weights as the matching singles division.

How to compute it by hand

  1. Take your target finish time and subtract your roxzone total (default 5 minutes).
  2. Running share: multiply what is left by 0.50 (Open), 0.52 (Pro) or 0.55 (Doubles). That is your total running time; divide by 8 for an average km.
  3. Stations: everything else is station time. Multiply it by each station's share from the table below.
  4. From a 5 km time: km pace = 5 km time ÷ 5 + 25 to 45 s. Running total = 8 × that. Finish = running total ÷ running share + roxzone.
  5. Clock: add run 1, then station 1, run 2, station 2 and so on, spreading the roxzone time evenly over the 8 stations.

Assumptions

Our model, not official

These shares are round-number assumptions of ours for a typical amateur, not fitted to official results and not published by HYROX. Heavier stations (sleds, wall balls, lunges) take a larger share in Pro. Edit any share in the calculator to match your own strengths.

  • Running share of (finish − roxzone): Open 50%, Pro 52%, Doubles 55% (both partners run, stations are shared).
  • Run fade: km 8 is up to 6% slower than km 1, rising evenly.
  • Roxzone: 5 minutes in total, spread equally over the 8 stations (our default, not official).
  • 5 km mode: run km pace = 5 km pace + 25 to 45 s/km fatigue (default 35).
  • Doubles split: the work of each station is divided 50/50, 60/40 or 70/30 in chunks that are easy to count (for example 50 m or 5 reps).

Questions people ask

How long is a Hyrox-style race?

The format is eight 1 km runs, each followed by one workout station, so 8 km of running plus eight stations (SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, row, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls). Finish times vary widely: many first-timers aim for roughly 1:30 to 2:00, strong amateurs go well under 1:20, and elite athletes finish in about an hour (our rule of thumb, not an official statistic).

What is the roxzone?

The roxzone is the transition area between the run course and the workout stations. The official rulebook mentions it (entering via the OUT arch or leaving via the IN arch by mistake costs a 2-minute penalty) but does not define it further. The walk or jog in and out of it is part of your clock, so this calculator lets you set a total roxzone time; our default of 5 minutes is an assumption, not an official figure.

What are the Doubles rules?

Per the official 26/27 rulebook, both partners run every 1,000 m together (a 1-minute penalty applies if one runs ahead) and enter and leave each station together. At the station the partners split the work as they choose: while one works the other rests, for example a You-Go-I-Go switch every 250 m on the row. The Doubles division suggests a split for each station.

How should I pace the runs?

Do not run at your 5 km pace. After a station your legs are loaded, so our estimate is your 5 km pace plus 25 to 45 seconds per km (default 35). Start the first km no faster than the rest, keep the middle six even, and accept a small fade (the calculator uses up to 6% from km 1 to km 8). In Doubles you run together, so plan around the slower partner.

What are sensible beginner target times?

Finishing comfortably matters more than the clock. A common first-race goal is 1:45:00 to 2:00:00. With a 5-minute roxzone total, our model turns 1:45:00 into about 6:15 per km for the runs and roughly 50 minutes for the eight stations. Adjust the station table if wall balls or lunges are your weak spot.

What should I train first?

Build the engine first: three easy to moderate runs a week, one including 1 km repeats at goal run pace. Then add the stations that cost beginners the most time: wall balls, sandbag lunges, burpee broad jumps and sled work, once or twice a week. Practise the transition from station to run. This is general fitness information, not medical advice; build up gradually and check with a doctor if unsure.
