Puente de la Constitución and Inmaculada, alone or new in town.

Sunday 6 and Tuesday 8 December frame Monday 7: which communities have it off, and what you can walk into on your own in Madrid, Barcelona and five more big cities.

Check the calendar

Which days are the long weekend where you live?

In 2026 the Día de la Constitución (6 December) falls on a Sunday and the Inmaculada Concepción (8 December) on a Tuesday. The 2026 national list (BOE, Resolución de 17 de octubre de 2025, BOE-A-2025-21667 ↗) marks 8 December “Fiesta Nacional no sustituible” in all 19 communities. It has no row for Sunday 6 December itself, and a row “7 Lunes siguiente al Día de la Constitución Española” marked “Fiesta Nacional respecto de la que no se ha ejercido la facultad de sustitución” for ten communities. Where Monday 7 is not a holiday, many people take it as a day of leave to make a Saturday–Tuesday break (a “puente”). Municipalities can add local holidays, so this table is a guide, not payroll advice.

Madrid: a long weekend alone

Monday 7 December is a holiday in Comunidad de Madrid (BOE annex), so the long weekend runs Saturday to Tuesday with no leave needed. Local holidays may add to this.

Christmas markets and free museum time

  • Plaza Mayor Christmas market: esMadrid lists it for “Late November to 31 December 2026”, free entry, 10:00–21:00 Sunday to Thursday and 10:00–22:00 Friday, Saturday and holiday eves. The exact opening day is not published yet, so it is unconfirmed whether it is open on 5 December (esMadrid ↗).
  • Free museum hours: the Museo Reina Sofía lists 6 December among its free-entry days, and free entry on ordinary days is the last two hours before closing, for individual visitors only. The page does not state the year, so confirm on the museum site (Reina Sofía ↗).

Tolkien Universe book club at a Madrid library

Biblioteca Pública Municipal Iván de Vargas (Centro)

On Friday 4 December 2026 at 19:00 the Iván de Vargas public library in central Madrid holds the December session of its Tolkien Universe club. The group meets on the first Friday of each month, this season on 2 October, 6 November and 4 December, to share readings, interpretations and curiosities about the work of J. R. R. Tolkien. The first book was The Hobbit. The club is for adults over 18, free, and entry is open until the room is full. The library does not provide the books, and the listing gives no end time, so we estimate about ninety minutes. A themed book club is an easy way to meet people alone, because you arrive with a shared story and a ready subject, and in a winter city the warm library is a good place to spend a Friday evening. «Un club para adentrarse en el universo literario de J. R. R. Tolkien» Starts 19:00, ends about 20:30. Source: Madrid city open data — Agenda de actividades y eventos (Ayuntamiento de Madrid, datos.madrid.es).

Going alone? What to expect. Public events like these are mostly drop-in or small groups, so arriving solo is normal. Arrive ten minutes early, note the official start time, and keep an exit plan. Over a long weekend, transport and opening hours change: check the organiser’s page and your return route before you go.

  • Free museum entry: the MNAC lists free visits on “all the first Sundays of each month” and on Saturdays from 3 pm. Sunday 6 December is the first Sunday of December (MNAC ↗).

Candlelight Bilbao: Coldplay vs. Imagine Dragons

Iglesia de la Encarnación (Atxuri)

On Saturday 5 December 2026 at 19:00 a Candlelight concert plays the songs of Coldplay against those of Imagine Dragons in the Iglesia de la Encarnación in Bilbao. The Spanish listing names pieces such as Clocks, Fix You, Viva la Vida, Radioactive, Believer and A Sky Full of Stars, played by a string ensemble among candles, for about an hour with doors opening 45 minutes early. Tickets cost from 15.50 to 31.50 euros depending on the seat, and seats are allocated on arrival by ticket type. It is an early-December evening of familiar pop in an unusual setting, which makes it simple to go alone: you know the songs, the lights are low and the room is quiet. Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult. «CANDLELIGHT Bilbao: Coldplay VS. Imagine Dragons» Starts 19:00, ends about 20:00. Source: Kulturklik, Basque Government culture agenda (CC BY).

48280 and Zilibito Records live, Kafe Antzokia, Bilbao

Bilboko Kafe Antzokia

On Saturday 5 December two bands, 48280 and Zilibito Records, play a concert at the Kafe Antzokia, a music venue and bar in Bilbao on Calle San Vicente. The Kulturklik listing gives little detail about the music beyond the names of the bands and the venue's own agenda as its source, so it is worth listening to both acts online first if you want to know what to expect. Tickets are sold in two tiers, from 10 euros, and we use the lower price. The language is Basque. The listing gives no end time, so we assume the show finishes around 23:30. It starts at 21:30. A club concert at a venue with its own bar is an easy night out for someone going alone, since the music gives everyone something to share. «48280 + Zilibito Records» Starts 21:30, ends about 23:30. Questions people ask

Is Monday 7 December 2026 a holiday in Spain?

Not nationally. 6 December 2026 is a Sunday, and the 2026 BOE list (BOE-A-2025-21667) shows Monday 7 December as a holiday in ten communities: Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Comunidad de Madrid, Región de Murcia, La Rioja and Melilla. Elsewhere, including Cataluña, Valencia and the País Vasco, check your regional and local calendar.

Is 8 December 2026 a national holiday?

Yes. The Inmaculada Concepción falls on Tuesday 8 December 2026 and the BOE lists it as a non-replaceable national holiday in all 19 communities and cities.

Which days make the puente in 2026?

Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8 December. Sunday 6 (Constitución) and Tuesday 8 (Inmaculada) bracket Monday 7, which is a holiday in ten communities and a bridge day of leave elsewhere.

Are the Christmas markets open that weekend?

Madrid’s Plaza Mayor market is listed by esMadrid for late November to 31 December 2026, free entry; the exact opening day is not published. The Fira de Santa Llúcia in Barcelona has no published 2026 dates yet (the 2025 edition ran 28 November to 23 December), so treat it as unconfirmed and check the organiser.

Why are some cities thin or empty?

This page uses the open city calendars in our data as of 2026-10-25. They publish 2–6 weeks ahead, so more events appear through November and nothing here is invented. Where nothing is listed, use the always-on ideas.
