As part of Bilbao's Dantza Plazetan street-dance programme, the Ondalan giants troupe parades its towering figures through Calle Luzarra in Deusto on the morning of 31 December. It is a free open-air street event, so you can simply turn up and walk along with the crowd. Neighbourhood parades like this are a friendly way to feel part of the city's end-of-year mood.
On New Year's Eve the night watchman of Mauthausen takes one last round of the year, lantern in hand, through the lanes, old stairways and little squares of this thousand-year-old trading town on the Danube, telling its stories as he goes. A calm, atmospheric way to spend the early evening before the celebrations. Meet at Schloss Pragstein; adults 6 euros. On Thursday 31 December the Théâtre du Cyclope in Nantes opens its doors for a special New Year's Eve evening that promises more than a play: a moment of sharing. The formula combines a show, an aperitif and a cocktail. The show, Vivement qu'on meure, is an absurd yet touching comedy by and with Marox, who searches for the answer to where the dead go after the loss of her beloved goat, meeting an odd cast along the way, including a shaman, a Mexican switchboard operator and Frida Kahlo. It lasts about an hour and the theatre recommends it from age five. Tickets range from 10.50 to 15 euros, and the price here is the top figure. The announcement is in French. Young double bassist Chen Pin-Ren, a Tainan-born music student, gives a solo recital in the Recital Hall of the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts on the last evening of 2026. It is a small, intimate concert that is easy to attend alone before heading out for the countdown. OPENTIX lists tickets at NT$300.
The mountain village of Vorderstoder in the Stodertal sees the year out together at Dorfliebe in the village centre: music, a drink with the neighbours and, as the highlight, one shared fireworks display at the turn of the year. A walk, a swim or a slow brunch on 1 January has no countdown and no dress code: you only need a start time. Events are listed below when our data has them. Some parkrun locations hold an extra run on 1 January in some years; each location’s organisers decide, and we have not confirmed which will do so in 2027. Check your local parkrun page, or see this fan-maintained list of parkrun special event days (2026 edition) ↗ for how it has worked.
Start the year with a jump into the crystal-clear, very cold water of Lake Hallstatt, or simply watch the brave ones from the shore. At the Untersee lido the local mobile sauna team and the water rescue host the New Year swim while the radio plays the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert. No timing, no sign-up: anyone can take part free of charge, at their own risk and only if fit for it.
