La Scala opening night 2026: going alone, with or without a ticket.

The 2026/27 season opens with Verdi’s Otello on Monday 7 December 2026 at 18:00. La Scala’s own page lists that opening-night performance as sold out, so most solo visitors will follow it from outside. Below: what the theatre confirms, the later dates and the Under30 preview, and the cautious way to find a place to watch in Milan.

A plain guide for solo visitors and newcomers in Milan. Everything about the opera comes from the Teatro alla Scala website. We could not confirm the broadcast channel or any 2026 public screenings from an official source, so we say so instead of guessing.

What we found

How to follow it when you are alone

Low pressure. Take what suits you.

Check for tickets on the official page

What
Open the official Otello page and look at the 7 December row. It said Sold out when we checked.
How
Buy only from teatroallascala.org. The theatre states that it is the only safe channel.
Tip
If you are up to 36, the Under30/35 Pass costs 10 euro and gives access to ticket offers from -35 percent, per the theatre.

Take the Under30 preview or a later date

What
The Under30 preview is on Friday 4 December 2026 at 18:00, on sale from 4 November at 13:00.
How
Other performances run from 10 December to 5 January. Check each date on the official page.
Tip
A different night is often easier alone: the same production, fewer crowds.

Watch on TV or online

What
The radar for this page says a live broadcast on Rai 1 is expected, as in past years. We could not confirm the 2026 channel or time on a Rai page, so treat that as unconfirmed.
How
Check the Rai TV guide and RaiPlay close to the date.
Tip
Watching at home is a fair plan: 18:00 start, a long opera, snacks on the sofa.

Look for a public screening

What
In past years the City of Milan has run free public screenings of the opening night in various city venues under the name Prima Diffusa. We could not confirm 2026 screenings from an official page.
How
Check the Comune di Milano website and the La Scala site close to the date, and go only to a venue that is officially listed.
Tip
A screening is easy alone: you sit among strangers who came for the same thing.

Soak up the day without a ticket

What
7 December is Sant’Ambrogio, Milan’s patron saint day, so the city is lively. Piazza della Scala is the place where people gather before the opening.
How
We do not list any official street programme for 2026 because we could not confirm one.
Tip
Pick one thing, stay a short while and leave when you like.

If you feel alone that night

What
Say yes to one small thing: a coffee near the Duomo, or a walk past the lit theatre.
How
Meet & Mint shows who else is going to events near you, so you can arrive with a face to look for.
Tip
Our holidays-alone page has more ideas.

Why an opening night is easier alone than it looks

Nobody at a screening or a viewing expects conversation. Everyone looks at the same screen, there is an interval, and a small remark to the person beside you is enough. If you do get a ticket, going alone means one seat, which is often easier to find than a pair. For more ideas, see our page on spending the holidays alone.

Check before you go

This page is general information. The opera details are from the official Otello page. The broadcast and any public screenings are unconfirmed: check the Comune di Milano and Rai close to the date.
