Olentzero 2026 in Donostia: going alone on 24 December.

Olentzero comes down from the mountain on Thursday 24 December 2026. He is the Basque charcoal-burner who announces Christmas, and in towns such as San Sebastián he is the central figure of the Christmas Eve parade, with songs along the way. You do not need a group or a ticket to watch: arrive early, stand along the street, and go on to an evening plan.

A plain guide for solo visitors and newcomers. The 2026 route and times for Donostia are not published in the official sources we checked, so we give none: the city publishes them in December, and we link the official agenda.

What you will see on 24 December

WhatWhat it isWhy it suits going alone
OlentzeroA mythic charcoal-burner from Basque tradition, traditionally drawn as a stout man with a coal-black face, a beret and a pipe. He comes down from the mountain on 24 December.A parade is made for watching. Nobody expects you to talk to anyone.
The paradeOlentzero is the central figure of the Christmas Eve parade. In the Basque Country he and his companions walk the streets throwing sweets to children. You stand with the crowd and share the moment without a plan.
Carol groupsChoirs go out at dusk singing the story of Olentzero, often carrying a doll of him or a person dressed as a charcoal burner.Easy to join the edge of the crowd and listen. Songs break the ice.
The fireThe official Basque tourism agenda says that at nightfall the doll is set on fire, echoing the winter-solstice fire tradition behind the story.A shared ritual at night, with plenty of strangers watching the same thing.

This is the tradition as the official Basque and Donostia tourism sources describe it. What happens in San Sebastián on the day, including the route and time, is set by the city each year.

What we found

How to join when you are alone

Low pressure. Take what suits you.

Find the 2026 route and time

What
The city publishes the route in December. Check the official San Sebastián agenda, filtered to Donostia, from early December.
How
Local news and the tourist office also repeat the time and starting point.
Tip
We do not list a time or route here because the sources we checked do not publish 2026 details yet.

Go early and stand along the route

What
Arrive well before the parade, pick a spot on the pavement and wrap up: it is winter and you will be standing.
How
Spots on narrow streets fill first. A corner or a wider square gives you room.
Tip
Stand next to families or other solo watchers and say hello. A comment on the parade is enough.

Combine it with an evening plan

What
24 December is Nochebuena, and many places close early. Book dinner or a table before you go, or plan a walk afterwards.
How
Check our San Sebastián events page for come-alone events near the date.
Tip
See our Christmas markets page for something to browse before or after.

If you feel alone that night

What
Say yes to one small thing: a hot drink at a café that is open, or a short walk to see the lights.
How
Meet & Mint shows who else is going to events near you, so you can arrive with a face to look for.
Tip
Our holidays-alone page has more ideas.

Why a street tradition is easy to do alone

Most social events ask you to make small talk with strangers. A parade does not: everyone faces the same direction and has something to look at. If you want company, a small comment to the person beside you is enough, and the singing gives a natural moment to join in. Olentzero is also a good way to see local culture on a night when many visitors stay in. For a wider read, see our page on spending the holidays alone.

Check before you go

This page is general information from official sources. Times, route and any traffic changes in San Sebastián are set by the city each December, so confirm them on the official agenda before you go.
