How it works

Your first run club alone: what to expect

Your first run club alone is easier than it sounds. Look for a group that says no-drop: the leader or a sweeper waits for the slowest runner, so nobody is left behind. Most clubs split into pace groups, so pick the slower one without apology. Arrive about 10 minutes early, find the leader and say it is your first time; they will introduce you and explain the route. Bring water and wear what you already run in. Afterwards many groups go for coffee or a beer, which is where the conversations happen.

  1. Pick a run below and open the official page to check the day, time and meeting point.
  2. Turn up early and tell the leader it is your first time.
  3. Choose your pace group: the slowest group is always a fine place to start.
  4. Stay for coffee and plan the next run with someone from the group in Meet & Mint.

Questions people ask

Can I join a run club if I am a beginner?

Yes. Look for clubs marked beginners welcome and no-drop. Most social run clubs have a slow group and nobody is expected to arrive with a friend.

What does no-drop mean?

No-drop means the group waits for the slowest runner, either by regrouping at corners or with a sweeper at the back, so you will not be left alone on the route.

What is parkrun?

A free, timed 5 km run held every Saturday morning in parks around the world, run by volunteers. Walkers and slow runners are normal, and the last finisher is applauded.

How current are these listings?

Each run shows the date we checked it. 17 of 179 rows were seen only in search results because the page was unreachable; they are labelled unconfirmed, so verify on the official page before you travel.
