Christmas markets 2026: opening dates, and how to go alone.

36 of 39 big European markets have announced their 2026 dates on an official page. Here they are, soonest first, each with its source, its hours and one tip for going on your own.

39 markets · 36 with confirmed 2026 dates

Opening dates, soonest first

Dates come only from each organiser’s, city’s or tourism board’s own page, with the date we checked it. Where the 2026 edition is not published yet we show no date, only “2026 dates not published yet” with the official link, and never guess.

No market matches. “Opens in the next 7 days” only counts markets with confirmed 2026 dates; clear it or pick another country.

Going alone

Five rules for a market on your own

  1. Go early on a weekday. In most cities the first hours after opening on Monday to Thursday are calmer than evenings and weekends, so you can walk, look and talk to stallholders.
  2. Stand at the high tables. The stand-up tables by the hot-drink and food stalls are shared by design. Asking “is this spot free?” is the normal opener.
  3. Join something with a programme. Choir sets, stage concerts, guided city walks and workshops give you a reason to be there and something to talk about. Check the official page of each market.
  4. Hold your cup deposit. Many German, Austrian and Swiss markets charge a deposit on the mug; return the mug to a stall to get it back, or keep it as a souvenir.
  5. Plan your way back. Late trains get busy after closing time. Note the last connection, keep your phone charged and leave by the edge of the crowd.

Drinking is optional everywhere: most stalls sell alcohol-free punch, tea or hot chocolate. More ideas on alcohol-free nights.

How it works

A Christmas market alone: how it works

  1. Pick a market above and open its official page to confirm the dates and hours.
  2. Learn five phrases in the local language with the free First Phrases deck linked on the card.
  3. Open Meet & Mint to see who else is going that evening and say hi in the event chat.
  4. Meet at a landmark (the tree, the main stage), and keep your way home in mind.

Questions people ask

When do the Christmas markets open in 2026?

It depends on the city. Of the 39 markets on this page, 36 have published their 2026 dates on an official page; the first to open is Antica Fiera di Santa Lucia in Bologna on Fri 6 Nov 2026; 2 more have published part of their dates. The rest have not published 2026 dates yet; we show a link to the official page instead of a date and update as organisers publish.

Is it normal to go to a Christmas market alone?

Yes. Markets are free, open-air and walk-through, and many visitors come on their own after work. Shared stand-up tables, choir and stage programmes and guided walks make it easy to start a conversation.

When is a Christmas market least crowded?

As a general rule, weekday afternoons soon after opening are calmer than evenings, Fridays and weekends, and the last days before 24 December are the busiest. Check each market’s hours on its official page.

Are the dates on this page official?

Yes, where marked “Confirmed for 2026”: each one links to the organiser’s, city’s or tourism board’s page and shows the date we checked it. “2026 dates not published yet” means the official site shows no 2026 edition yet.
