Krampuslauf of the Hirlatzer Teufel on the market square, Hallstatt
On the evening before St Nicholas' Day the Krampus rule the historic market square of Hallstatt, the lakeside village in the Salzkammergut. The local club, the Hirlatzer Teufel, puts on its show at 19:00: horned, fur-clad figures with bells and rods running through the crowd to the beat of drums, an Alpine winter custom that is loud, a little frightening and great fun to watch from the edge. Stalls serve drinks from 17:00 and the Nikolaus appears at 20:00. Entry is free; dress very warmly. «Krampuslauf der Hirlatzer Teufel Hallstatt» Starts 17:00, ends about 21:00.
