The salt-works brass band's Christmas hut and small market, Ebensee

Ebensee, at the southern end of the Traunsee, has had a brass band since the days of the imperial salt works. For one Saturday afternoon the band opens a Christmas hut at the corner of Bahnhofstraße by its rehearsal hall: the quintet and the youngsters' band play shepherd and Christmas tunes while punch, Bratwürstl and Pofesen, fried sweet bread, are served, and a few stalls sell small gifts, biscuits and the band's calendar. Ebensee Fetzenzug: UNESCO-Listed Carnival Parade of the Rag Masks

Ehem. Gasthaus Neuhütte (start of the parade)

On Carnival Monday the Fetzen, masked figures dressed in patchwork rags with the Pritschenmeister and the Fetzenmusik, set off at 3 pm from the old Gasthaus Neuhütte towards the centre of Ebensee on the Traunsee. The tradition was declared Austrian intangible UNESCO heritage in 2011, and afterwards the revelry continues in the village inns. Ebensee Fetzenverbrennen: Burning the Rag Figure on Ash Wednesday

Einmündung Langbathbach in die Traun

The Ebensee carnival ends on Ash Wednesday with a tongue-in-cheek funeral: the Fetzen figure that symbolises the Ebenseer Fasching is carried to the Traun riverbank to mourning music, burned, and everyone symbolically washes out their empty wallets in the river. The short ritual starts at 3 pm where the Langbathbach meets the Traun in the village centre. Free legends walk around Rindbach on the Traunsee, Ebensee

Ebensee's public library leads a gentle walk through Rindbach, on the southern shore of the Traunsee in the Salzkammergut, telling the local legends along the way: dwarfs, witches and giants, the old longing for gold and the natural wonders people once could not explain. Taking part is free and needs no booking; just meet at the big lawn by the Rindbach stream (fine weather only).
