One of the loveliest midwinter customs of the Salzkammergut: the Glöckler, dressed in white with bells at the waist and huge, delicately cut caps lit from inside, walk from house to house through the dark and dance their circles, spirals and figures of eight in perfect step. In Abersee on the Wolfgangsee they set off from the Gasthof Zinkenbachmühle at 16:00 and return there. Watch from the roadside; free. The end is not published, allow about three hours; the next day's run depends on the weather. «Glöcklerlauf in Abersee» Starts 16:00, ends about 19:00. How it works

Three small moves for a good night out alone

  1. Pick one event a day with a clear start time and a host — a sing-along or a game night is easier than a crowded bar, and it gives each holiday day a shape.
  2. Get ten phrases in the local language for that exact evening with Phrases for tonight, and practise the first one on the way.
  3. Open Meet & Mint to see who else is going, say hi in the group chat, and meet at the door. Spending 24 or 25 December alone? Create a free invite with the dinner or new-in-town template and gather other newcomers.

Questions people ask

What can I do if I spend Christmas alone in a new city?

Pick one event a day with a clear start time, or host a small orphans’ Christmas dinner for other newcomers. Many people are alone over the holidays; these events are the easiest places to meet them.

Is anything open on 25 December and 1 January?

Fewer events run on those days. Check the list for 24, 26 and 31 December and plan the day before.

Are these events free?

Most are free or under €15. Each card shows it; always confirm on the official page.
