Edinburgh Hogmanay 2026/27: going alone, with or without a Street Party ticket.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay runs four days: Torchlight Procession on Tuesday 29 December 2026 (18:30), Night Afore Party on Wednesday 30 December, then the Street Party and Hogmanay in the Gardens with Underworld on Thursday 31 December (both 20:00). The organiser’s booking pages show a from-price for each, and First Footin’ is the free New Year’s Day music trail. Below: the confirmed facts, solo tips, and what to do if you have no ticket.

A plain guide for solo visitors and people new to Edinburgh. Dates, times and prices come from the official Hogmanay website (produced by Unique Assembly for the City of Edinburgh Council), read on 26 Oct 2026. Where we could not confirm something from an official page, we say so.

What we found

How to do it when you are alone

Pick one or two. You do not need all four days.

Start with the Torchlight Procession

What
Book one torch ticket on 29 December. Gather at The Meadows from the early evening; the procession sets off at 18:30.
How
Expect live street theatre, fire performers and drummers before the pipes and the Shetland Vikings lead the way.
Tip
Walk with the crowd and talk to whoever is next to you. Everyone is holding a torch and a reason to smile.

Street Party on the 31st

What
Ticket holders enter the Princes Street area from 20:00 and stay until about 00:45. Re-entry is not allowed.
How
Alcohol is allowed only in plastic or cans up to 500 ml, maximum 4 per person, never glass. Bags no bigger than A3 and no umbrellas.
Tip
Pick a meeting point with a friend you have just made, because phone signal is limited, and download your e-ticket first.

Gardens concert for the fireworks view

What
Underworld play and soundtrack the Midnight Moment under the Castle. Doors 20:00, stage 20:50, last entry 23:00.
How
You choose an entry gate (West or South) at purchase and cannot change it.
Tip
Choose it if you want music more than street atmosphere. A Street Party ticket does not work here.

Seated shows, if crowds are not for you

What
McEwan Hall hosts Blazin’ Fiddles (29 Dec), Julie Fowlis (30 Dec) and a New Year’s Day chat-and-music show.
How
Seated and indoors, so you are never stuck standing in the cold alone.
Tip
Tickets from £27.50 per the organiser. Check each page for exact times.

No Street Party ticket? Plan B

What
Tickets are not resold officially and unofficial listings can be invalid. Check the official site for availability instead.
How
Look at the cheaper and calmer events (Torchlight, McEwan Hall) and the free First Footin’ trail on 1 January.
Tip
We found no official free viewing area for the midnight fireworks, so do not plan around one. Ask in Meet & Mint who else is looking for a plan.

Getting there and home safely

What
The organiser says the city centre has road closures and recommends public transport. Trams, Lothian Buses and ScotRail all publish Hogmanay timetables on the organiser’s page.
How
Its current text lists late-night buses and free trams after midnight, but is dated to the previous year, so confirm the 2026/27 arrangements.
Tip
Dress for a Scottish winter night outdoors: sturdy shoes, waterproofs, no umbrella.

Safety in a crowd of tens of thousands

The organiser says the events are busy, all-standing and run with Police Scotland, the council, stewards, medics and welfare staff. Their own tips: arrange a meeting point, expect poor phone signal, download tickets in advance, follow steward announcements and look after each other. Bags are searched. Dogs, drones, flares and umbrellas are not allowed. On your own, tell one person your plan, charge your phone, keep a small bag, agree where you will meet someone, and know your route home. For more ideas, see our page on spending the holidays alone.

Free or cheap things to do alone

Official: First Footin’ on 1 January is free (2027 details to come), and the Torchlight Procession and McEwan Hall shows are the lower-priced tickets. Our own suggestions, not from an official source: Edinburgh’s national museums and galleries are usually free to enter for their permanent collections, but their sites blocked our plain request, so check opening hours for 1 January; a morning walk on Calton Hill or Arthur’s Seat is free; the Old Town is easy to wander once the crowds go. Side note: the Stonehaven Fireballs, in another town, are free with no ticket. The community organisers’ site (headed 2027) says people gather in the High Street from 22:00 on 31 December, the ceremony starts at midnight for about 20 minutes, and access closes at capacity from about 23:00. You cannot be at both, so choose one for midnight.

Where this comes from

Checked 26 Oct 2026 with plain requests. The organiser lists Torchlight tickets as on sale since 9 Oct 2026; we found no stated sale date for Street Party or Gardens tickets, only a Book now button and from-prices. Unconfirmed: Loony Dook 2027, First Footin’ 2027 venues and times, Hogmanay 2026/27 late-night transport details, and sold-out status of any event. National museum sites returned 403 to plain requests and were not circumvented.

How it works

  1. Check the official pages for the event you want and book only from the official site, Ticketmaster or tickets-scotland.com.
  2. Plan your route home, a meeting point and a charged phone.
  3. Choose one night, then add the free First Footin’ trail on 1 January.

Questions people ask

When is Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 2026/27?

Four days from Tuesday 29 December 2026 to New Year’s Day, Friday 1 January 2027. The Street Party and Hogmanay in the Gardens are on Thursday 31 December, from 20:00.

How much is a Hogmanay Street Party ticket?

The official page showed prices from £10 on 26 Oct 2026. Final prices depend on ticket type and fees: check the official page.

Can I go to Hogmanay alone?

Yes. The Torchlight Procession even requires only one torch per two people, and the events are crowded, friendly and steward-staffed. Pick a meeting point and download your ticket.

What if I do not have a Street Party ticket?

Do not buy from resellers: the organiser says resale is prohibited and unofficial listings can be invalid. Try the Torchlight Procession, a McEwan Hall show or the free First Footin’ trail on 1 January.

Is the Loony Dook on in 2027?

We could not confirm it from an official page. It is usually a 1 January dip at South Queensferry; check before you plan.

Are the Stonehaven Fireballs on the same night?

Per the community organisers’ site, yes, at midnight on 31 December, free with no ticket. It is a different town, so you must choose one for midnight.
