Thermal-camera walk: see where houses lose heat, Roubaix

Corner of rue Lalande and rue Pierre de Roubaix (meeting point)

Roubaix is a red-brick textile town next to Lille, and on a cold December evening its terraced houses show exactly where the heat escapes. On this guided walk an adviser from Urbanis carries a thermal camera along the streets, explains insulation faults on the screen and talks through concrete fixes. A curious, practical hour in a small group. Free, but sign up with the city's housing service (03 20 66 48 70 or pha@ville-roubaix.fr). «Balade thermique à Roubaix» Starts 17:30, ends about 19:00. Free first Sunday at La Piscine art museum, Roubaix

La Piscine – Musée d'Art et d'Industrie André Diligent

La Piscine is one of France's most beautiful museums: a 1930s Art Deco swimming pool turned into an art gallery, with sculptures lined up along the water under a great stained-glass sun. On the first Sunday of the month the permanent collections are free for everyone, and so is the Révolution Denim display shown among them; the big temporary exhibition on art and anarchism is at a reduced rate. Free entry to the collections. «1er dimanche du mois» Starts 13:00, ends about 18:00. Source: OpenAgenda — La Piscine - Roubaix (open data).

This unusual tour of the Révolution denim exhibition pairs a museum guide with a mystery guest who joins the conversation. Friday Night Sketching at La Piscine Museum: Drawing a Face

La Piscine – Musée d’Art et d’Industrie

On certain Friday evenings Roubaix's art museum in a former swimming pool opens for drawing, writing and conversation. This session teaches a few basics of line, shadow and hatching so you can sketch a face from the collection, whatever your level. It is free from age 12 with booking, and drawing side by side makes small talk easy.

How to go alone

Five steps for your first time

  1. Start with one hosted event; "Heritage Speed-Dating with Rare Library Treasures" fits.
  2. Check the details on the official page, since schedules and prices change.
  3. Arrive ten minutes early and tell the host you came alone. Hosts usually seat or introduce newcomers.
  4. Ask people how they found the event. Stay for the first hour, then leave or stay as you like.
  5. Go a second time. Familiar faces turn a first outing into a routine. In Meet & Mint you can see who else is going.
