PopJazz evening, Sade tribute and ambient set, Maunula House, Helsinki

Maunula House

On Friday 23 October the Metsäpuro hall of Maunula House in northern Helsinki hosts a PopJazz evening with two very different acts. The first is Sadetta luvassa, a six-piece tribute band that plays smooth jazz and rhythm and blues in the spirit of Sade, drawing on hits from the debut album Diamond Life and later records, with guitar, keyboards, drums, bass, saxophone and a lead singer. The second is untethered, a showcase concert by the singer-songwriter ēsau, who blends ambient sound, avant-garde electronics and alternative R&B into one continuous dreamlike piece, mixed live with the producer mizu and built around covers and original songs about memory and letting go. Entry is free. The listing is in Finnish. The evening starts at 18:00 and ends about 20:00, so it works well as an easy start to the weekend on your own. «PopJazz @ Maunula-talo – Sadetta luvassa & untethered» Starts 18:00, ends about 20:00. Maan Haldiit folk music and dance, Vapaan taiteen tila, Helsinki

Vapaan taiteen tila

On Saturday 24 October the independent space Vapaan taiteen tila in the Pasila-Vallila area of Helsinki hosts a short performance by Maan Haldiit, a folk music group that combines minimalist playing with percussive dance. Ville Linna plays the bowed zither, the kantele and wind instruments, while Oona Yliperttula plays the bowed lyre, sings and dances rhythmically. Their instruments are handmade traditional ones, and the performance is accompanied by a short film. The listing says the show lasts roughly thirty to forty-five minutes, that entry is free, and that the doors close five minutes before the performance begins, so punctual arrival matters. The description is in English. The performance starts at 18:00 and ends about 19:00, a compact cultural outing that suits anyone coming alone and heading to dinner afterwards. «Maan Haldiit» Starts 18:00, ends about 19:00. Coffee and Karaoke comedy theatre, Iso Omena Library, Espoo

Iso Omena Library

On Wednesday 28 October the Iso Omena Library in Espoo hosts a free theatre performance by Theatre Esko called Coffee and Karaoke. It follows an association that gathers year after year to discuss Finnish politics over coffee and karaoke, worrying about matters such as dog-poop landmines, pigeon rights and the language gap between generations. Then the members decide to found a new political party for the coming election term, and the audience is asked to vote. During the show you can, if you like, influence the course of the annual meeting and join in community singing. People who register in advance also receive a coffee and a pastry. The performance follows safer space principles and lasts about one hour. It is performed in Finnish. It starts at 18:30 and ends about 19:30. «Teatteri Esko esittää: KAHVIA JA KARAOKEA» Starts 18:30, ends about 19:30. Source: City of Helsinki / City of Espoo — LinkedEvents (CC BY 4.0).

How it works

Going to an event in Finland: alone is fine

  1. Pick an event above and open the official page: check the date, the price and whether you need to book.
  2. Open Meet & Mint — many of these events are also in the app, so you can see who is going. Not there? Tap "+" to add it and gather a group.
  3. Join alone, say hi: every event has its own chat, and each group going together gets its own room. Agree where to meet before you set off.
  4. Meet at the event: walk in already knowing a name or two. The app keeps your plans, with a countdown and reminders.
