Winter lights in Amsterdam and Brussels, going alone.

Amsterdam Light Festival runs from Thursday 26 November 2026 to Sunday 17 January 2027, and Brussels Winter Wonders from Friday 27 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. In Amsterdam the artworks are free to see in public space; the audio guide and map are paid and the boats are ticketed. One Brussels page’s metadata says 28 November: check the official page. Amsterdam Light Festival

Dates and hours
Edition 15: Thu 26 Nov 2026 to Sun 17 Jan 2027. Lights on daily 16:30 to 23:00; on 31 Dec the festival closes at 21:00. [source]
Free walk or paid boat
The artworks stand in public space and are freely accessible, says the festival. The walking route is about 4.5 km (about 1.5 hours); you can start anywhere, and Amstel 1 or Waterlooplein are suggested. The audio guide and route map (Light Walk) are a paid product in the festival app, from November; the app price differs between two official pages, so check it in the app. The boat is the ticketed option: about 75 minutes, covered heated, open or drinks boats, departure times and prices in the ticket shop (the FAQ says cruises start at EUR 29.75). [source] [source] [source]
Best evenings
The official pages name no quiet times. Tip, not from the official page: lights come on at 16:30, so an early-evening start gives you the dark sky with time to finish the 4.5 km before a late dinner. For a boat, the open-boat and drinks categories are described as small groups with a guide, which suits solo guests who like to chat.
Getting there
The festival names Central Station and Waterlooplein as the nearest stops and asks visitors to come by public transport or bike. Check routes and times in the GVB site or the 9292 planner (the festival recommends 9292). We publish no departure times. [source]

Brussels Winter Wonders

Dates and hours
Winter Wonders: Fri 27 Nov 2026 to Sun 3 Jan 2027, daily 12:00 to 22:00. It closes at 18:00 on 24 and 31 Dec and 3 Jan, with no sound-and-light show at the Grand-Place on those days. One official page’s metadata says 28 Nov: check the official page. [source] [source]
Free walk or paid boat
The official pages we read state no entry fee and no boat; they list chalets, attractions and an interactive map. Attractions and food are separate, so check each item on the official page. The detailed programme comes from November 2026: TBC. For a solo evening, the walk through the centre is the whole plan: Grand-Place, the market and the lights.
Best evenings
The official pages name no quiet times. Tip, not from the official page: it opens at 12:00 and the sound-and-light show is not on every day, so arrive in the afternoon and stay into the evening, and avoid 24 and 31 Dec if you want the full show.
Getting there
Official: Gare Centrale (Brussels-Central), Bourse or De Brouckère; metro lines 1 and 5, trams 10 and 4, or buses 29, 33, 46, 71, 89 and 95. Check times in the STIB-MIVB journey planner. We publish no departure times. [source]

Going alone: how to do it

Amsterdam: walk the free route for the art, or book one cruise for the water view; you do not need both. Brussels: one walk through the centre covers it. In both cities the organisers do not name quiet times, so we offer only labelled tips. A fixed meeting point helps if you meet people from the app.

What we could not confirm

Brussels programme and details come from November 2026 (TBC). The Amsterdam festival app and walking products are due from November, and their price differs between two official pages. Our /events/ pages for Amsterdam and Brussels do not exist yet, so we link the general events page.

Questions people ask

When does Amsterdam Light Festival 2026 start?

Edition 15 runs from Thursday 26 November 2026 to Sunday 17 January 2027, with lights on daily from 16:30 to 23:00 (closing at 21:00 on 31 December), per the festival’s own pages.

Is Amsterdam Light Festival free?

The festival says the artworks stand in public space and are freely accessible. The audio guide and route map (Light Walk) are a paid product in the festival app, and the canal cruises are ticketed. Prices: check the official pages, since two of them list different Light Walk prices.

Walk or boat, which is better alone?

The walk is about 4.5 km (about 1.5 hours) and you can start anywhere. The boat takes about 75 minutes and is ticketed. The open-boat and drinks categories are described as small groups with a guide. Both work alone; the walk costs less and leaves the timing to you.

When does Brussels Winter Wonders 2026 start?

The organiser’s title, banner and practical-information page say Friday 27 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. The home page metadata says 28 November, so check the official page. Daily 12:00 to 22:00, closing at 18:00 on 24 and 31 December and 3 January.

When is the quietest time to go?

Neither official site names quiet times, so we do not either. Our own tip: go early in the evening, once the lights are on, and avoid the big opening days.

How do I get there by public transport?

Amsterdam: the festival names Central Station and Waterlooplein as the nearest stops; use GVB or 9292. Brussels: Gare Centrale, Bourse or De Brouckère, metro 1 and 5, trams 10 and 4, per the organiser; use STIB-MIVB. We publish no departure times.
