Winter blues when you live alone: small things that help

Short days and long evenings can make an empty flat feel emptier. Nothing here is a cure and none of it is medical advice. These are small, ordinary things that many people find make November easier to get through, plus a few ways to use Come Alone to have somewhere to be.

When to get help

If low mood lasts more than two weeks, or you have thoughts of harming yourself, contact a doctor or your local emergency number. In the EU the emergency number is 112. If you are in danger right now, call it.

Lines in some of the countries we cover (sources below):

  • EU: 112 emergency number, free, everywhere in the EU
  • Spain: 024 suicide-prevention line, free, confidential, 24 hours
  • UK: Samaritans 116 123 free from any phone, 24 hours
  • France: 3114 national suicide-prevention number, free, 24h/24
  • Portugal: SNS 24 808 24 24 24 national health line

Daylight and a routine that does not depend on mood

  • Get outside early, even briefly. Ten or fifteen minutes of morning daylight on a walk or on the way to a coffee costs nothing. A grey sky outdoors is still brighter than most rooms indoors.
  • Fix one outing in the week. The same café, class, walk or library on the same day, so you do not have to decide each time. A fixed slot is easier to keep than a plan you have to feel like.
  • Keep the basics regular. Meals, a normal bedtime and getting dressed as if you were going out. Boring, and it helps the evenings feel less shapeless.
  • Plan the dark hours, not just the days. In Europe the clocks go back on 25 October 2026, so it is dark earlier. Put something small in the 18:00 to 21:00 window, such as a call, a class, or an event.

Go out alone, with a plan already made

  • Find an event tonight. The "Tonight" board on [comealone.app](/#tonight) lists what is on in your city today. Pick the nearest one, not the best one.
  • Use the Solo-friendly tag. On the events list, the "Solo-friendly only" filter shows events whose own listing says beginners, newcomers or individuals are welcome, or whose format suits one person: talks, guided walks, classes, language exchanges, book clubs, board games, run clubs. Without the tag you can still go alone. It means the listing does not say so. [Browse all events by city](/events/).
  • Put your city in your calendar. Every city has a calendar feed you can subscribe to in Apple Calendar, Google Calendar or Outlook, at a link like https://comealone.app/feed/v1/ics/madrid.ics (swap madrid for barcelona, lisbon, london, paris or your own city). New events appear without you opening the site. The format is explained on [events without an account](/meetup-without-account/).
  • Try a regular, not a one-off. [Book clubs](/book-clubs/), [game nights](/game-nights/), [walk and talk](/walks/) and [library nights](/libraries/) repeat, so a face you saw once becomes a face you know.
  • Holidays coming up? See [holidays alone](/christmas/) and the [Christmas markets 2026](/christmas-markets-2026/) guide.

Low-pressure social steps

  • Go for the activity, not the conversation. At a talk, a walk or a game, there is always something to look at and something to say about it.
  • Set a small goal. One sentence to one person, or stay for one hour. You are allowed to leave after that.
  • Say the plain thing. "I am new here" or "I came on my own" is a normal opening line, and many people at these events came alone too.
  • Message one person you already know. A short text ("I walk to the market on Saturday, want to come?") is easier to answer than a big invitation.
  • Follow up once. If you liked someone, suggest the same event again next week.

For the evenings you stay in

Not every night needs to be an outing. For quiet ideas for long evenings at home, see [long evenings](https://hello-question.com/long-evenings/) on Hello Question. For what is on near you in winter, see [Today Nearby: winter](https://todaynearby.app/winter/).

Questions people ask

Is it normal to feel low in winter when you live alone?

Many people notice their mood dips when days get short, and living alone can make evenings feel longer. If it is heavy or does not lift, see the box at the top of this page.

What is a small thing I can do today?

Go outside in daylight for ten minutes, then pick one event or activity this week on comealone.app and put it in your calendar.

How do I find events I can attend alone?

Use the Solo-friendly filter on the events list, or subscribe to your city's calendar feed, for example https://comealone.app/feed/v1/ics/madrid.ics.

What if I go out and do not talk to anyone?

That still counts. Being around other people is a start, and next time it will feel more familiar.

When should I talk to a doctor?

If low mood lasts more than two weeks, or you have thoughts of harming yourself, contact a doctor or your local emergency number. In the EU the emergency number is 112.
