Hanukkah alone 2026, far from family.

Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday 4 December and ends on Saturday 12 December. It is an eight-day Jewish festival of lights, and one more candle is lit each evening. If family is far away, you can still mark it: see who is lighting in your city, bring something sweet to share, or invite a few new friends over for a candle night.

A dated table, then practical ideas for the eight nights when you are alone or new in a city, and how to find people for an evening out. No specific 2026 event is listed here: public events are announced by each city’s community.

What we found

Ideas for the eight nights

Practical and low pressure. Take what suits you, and none of it requires being religious.

Find a public lighting

What
Many cities hold a public menorah lighting during the festival.
How
Check the website or social pages of your city’s Jewish community, a local Chabad centre or a synagogue. Dates and times are announced by them.
Tip
Go a little early and ask a volunteer where to stand. Visitors are usually welcome, but confirm with the organiser.

Eat something fried

What
Sufganiyot (jam doughnuts) and latkes (potato pancakes) are the classic treats, because both are made in oil.
How
Look for a Jewish bakery or deli in your city, or make latkes at home.
Tip
Buy a box of sufganiyot and bring it to a friend or a neighbour. Sharing is the point.

Invite a candle night

What
A short evening: light the candles, eat, talk.
How
Invite two or three people you have just met, such as a colleague, a language-exchange friend or a neighbour. It can be 45 minutes.
Tip
Ask your guests whether they have a favourite song or story from home. Nobody has to know the blessings.

Join a community event

What
Communities often add family evenings, concerts, games or a communal meal during the eight days.
How
Look at the community’s page for the week of 4 to 12 December, and write to the organiser if the details are unclear.
Tip
Say you are new. Hosts often like to introduce newcomers.

Keep it simple at home

What
A single candle and a call or video chat with family can be enough.
How
Pick one evening to call. The festival is eight nights, so there is room for a time zone.
Tip
Cook one dish from home and eat it with someone else.

Learn the story

What
Hanukkah remembers the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the second century BCE.
How
A short neutral overview is on Wikipedia, and Hebcal has a plain summary.
Tip
Ask a friend what the festival means to them. Their answer is more interesting than a text.

Finding people for an evening out

You do not need a big plan. Pick one of the eight evenings, choose a place that is easy to talk in, and invite one or two people. Meet & Mint shows events and people near you on one map, so you can join something in your city alone, chat with the group beforehand and meet at the door. Come Alone lists evening events by city if you want a plan that is not about the festival too.

A few words

“Chag Hanukkah sameach” means “happy Hanukkah holiday”. For greetings in other languages see First Phrases.

Where this comes from

Checked 25 Oct 2026. The dates come from the Hebcal calendar and its data feed, which agree. We list no specific 2026 event, address or time: public lightings and community events are announced by each local community, so check their pages. Chabad centres run many public lightings, but their directory could not be checked by our tools, so we do not link it.

How it works

  1. Check the dates in the table.
  2. Look up your city’s community for public lightings and events, or pick an evening to host.
  3. Open Meet & Mint to find people near you for an evening out.
