Municipal Band's Sunday concert at the Kiosko, Portugalete

Kiosko

A wind band playing at lunchtime on a Sunday is one of the oldest and friendliest ways to spend a weekend in a Basque town. The Banda Municipal de Música of Portugalete performs at the Kiosko, the bandstand in the town on the Nervión estuary just downriver from Bilbao, at one o'clock. The listing does not give the programme, so expect the usual mix of marches, pasodobles and light concert repertoire a municipal band brings to a bandstand. Entry is free and open to anyone passing by: stand at the edge, take a seat on a bench or join the neighbours with a coffee before the vermouth hour. Check the weather, as bandstand concerts depend on it. «Banda Municipal de Música de Portugalete» Starts 13:00, ends about 14:00. Three-band rock night, Sala Groove, Portugalete

Sala Groove

On Saturday evening 28 November the Sala Groove music venue in Portugalete, on the Nervión estuary near Bilbao, presents a live night with three bands: Fractal Experience, Madame Rachel and Fugitivos de la Luz. The Kulturklik listing, which takes its information from the Groove studios, gives only the names of the groups and the date, so it is a chance to discover local acts rather than a well-known headliner. Tickets are sold in two price levels, ten and twelve euros, and the page links to the box office. The language is Spanish. The listing gives 20:30 as the start, and as the source gives no end time we assume the night finishes around 23:00. The venue is in the Ballonti industrial estate. «FRACTAL EXPERIENCE + MADAME RACHEL + FUGITIVOS DE LA LUZ (28 de noviembre - Portugalete)» Starts 20:30, ends about 23:00. «Ai, gure juaneteak»: Laboa songs on stage, free, Portugalete

Centro Cultural Santa Clara

In the Santa Clara cultural centre of Portugalete, the old port town on the left bank of the Bilbao estuary, an actor-musician and two musician-actors blur the line between word and music in a hybrid stage piece built on the songs of Mikel Laboa, the great voice of Basque song. Familiar melodies such as Izarren hautsa and Negu hurbila are reread from a present-day point of view. It is in Basque, free, and a fine way to feel the local culture even if you only follow the music. «Ai, gure juaneteak» Starts 19:00, ends about 20:30.
