Physics talk: did the Universe begin? Science Forum, Villeneuve-d'Ascq
The Forum départemental des Sciences in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, next to Lille, invites the public to an evening lecture by Jean-Marc Lévy-Leblond, a theoretical physicist and emeritus professor who edits the journal Alliage. His subject is the Big Bang and the question people always ask next: what was there before it? He argues that the idea of an absolute beginning owes more to the traps of language, and to a loose reading of the equations, than to the physics itself. Without disputing scientific facts, he offers a careful but accessible reflection at the meeting point of science and philosophy, about time, infinity and the words we use. Entry is free and the listing recommends the age of 12 and above. It is a Wednesday evening from 18:30 to 20:00, in French. The forum lists a telephone, an email and a web page for questions. «L’Univers a-t-il vraiment eu un commencement ?» Starts 18:30, ends about 20:00.
