First time?

Sauna etiquette for first-timers

  • Towel. Bring one big towel to sit or lie on, so your skin never touches the bench. Many venues rent towels; the venue page says.
  • Shower first. Shower with soap before you go in, and dry off a little so you do not drip on the benches.
  • Keep it quiet. Speak softly or not at all, keep phones outside, and ask before you start a conversation. Leave when you feel dizzy or too hot.
  • Aufguss. At a scheduled infusion session the door stays closed while the host fans hot air, so arrive on time and leave only between rounds.
  • Textile rules differ by country. In Germany, Austria and often the Netherlands, saunas are commonly textile-free (nude); in UK and Nordic public saunas swimwear is common. Rules also differ by venue and by day, so always check the venue page before you go. Only what a page states is shown on our cards.
  • Cold plunge. Cool down gradually, never plunge alone in open water if you are unsure, and follow the venue's own rules.

How it works

Alone at a sauna social in London: how it works

A sauna social is a session where people who do not know each other share the heat, then cool down together, often with a drink of water or tea afterwards. Nobody needs a group: hosts of social sessions and aufguss rounds expect solo visitors. Arrive early, read the house rules at the door and follow what the regulars do.

  1. Find a venue below, open the official page and check the day, price, booking and textile rule.
  2. Book or turn up as the page says; some sessions are drop-in, others need a booked slot or membership.
  3. Come alone: bring a towel, flip-flops, water and swimwear if the page asks for it.
  4. Meet people in Meet & Mint before or after, and plan the next session together.
