First time?

Your first climbing session, alone

  • Intro or induction first. Many gyms ask newcomers to take a short safety induction or intro session before climbing freely. The card for each gym quotes what its own page says.
  • Shoes and chalk. Most gyms rent climbing shoes; bring socks and a water bottle. Check the gym page for rental prices, they are not listed on every card.
  • Bouldering vs. rope climbing. Bouldering is short routes over crash mats with no rope and no partner needed; rope climbing needs a belay partner or an auto-belay. If you come alone, bouldering or an intro course is the easiest start.
  • Community nights. Where a gym lists a social, community, women's or after-work night, it is shown on the card as stated on the gym's page. Dates and rules change, so confirm before you go.
  • Age and waiver. Gyms usually have their own age limits and a waiver or registration step; follow the gym's page.

How it works

Start climbing alone: how it works

  1. Pick a gym below and open its official page; check the intro session or community night, the price and the booking rule.
  2. Book or turn up as the page says, then borrow shoes and follow the safety briefing.
  3. Come alone: intro sessions and community nights are made for people who arrive without a group.
  4. Meet people in Meet & Mint before or after, and plan your next session together.

Questions people ask

Can I go climbing alone if I have never climbed?

Yes. Bouldering needs no rope and no partner, and the gyms listed here state a beginner intro, induction or course on their own pages (118 of 119 listings) or a social or community night (19).

What is the difference between an intro session and a social night?

An intro session (or induction) teaches the safety basics and first techniques to people who have not climbed before. A social or community night is a scheduled evening where the gym invites members and newcomers to climb together. Each card shows which of the two the gym's page states.

Do I need my own shoes?

Not usually: most gyms rent climbing shoes. Rental prices and rules are on each gym's page.

How current are these listings?

Each card shows the date we checked it (2026-10-20 for the latest) and quotes the sentence from the gym's own page that supports it. Schedules and prices change, so confirm on the official page.

Is there a gym missing in my city?

Probably: we only list gyms whose own page states a beginner intro or a social night, and we read each page by hand. Cities with a single listing are shown on this page; the rest have their own page.
