First time?

Your first climbing session, alone

  • Intro or induction first. Many gyms ask newcomers to take a short safety induction or intro session before climbing freely. The card for each gym quotes what its own page says.
  • Shoes and chalk. Most gyms rent climbing shoes; bring socks and a water bottle. Check the gym page for rental prices, they are not listed on every card.
  • Bouldering vs. rope climbing. Bouldering is short routes over crash mats with no rope and no partner needed; rope climbing needs a belay partner or an auto-belay. If you come alone, bouldering or an intro course is the easiest start.
  • Community nights. Where a gym lists a social, community, women's or after-work night, it is shown on the card as stated on the gym's page. Dates and rules change, so confirm before you go.
  • Age and waiver. Gyms usually have their own age limits and a waiver or registration step; follow the gym's page.
