Halloween alone 2026 · Chicago

Halloween alone in Chicago, and not lonely.

Chicago in costume is a spectacle, and 31 October 2026 being a Saturday means the whole lakefront and the Loop are busy from afternoon. For a solo night, busy is what you want — plenty of people, plenty of chances to say one sentence.

1. The free walk (0 €, about 90 minutes). Take the lakefront trail: free, paved, lit and open, with the skyline on one side and the water on the other. Walk the downtown stretch at dusk, then loop back through the Loop for the lit bridges and the crowd. The wind decides the length of your walk, not your legs. CTA trains run late and will take you home from either end.

2. A cultural night indoors (free or a few euros). Museums, small venues and film houses all run 31 October programming; the city publishes its events as open data and our hub turns that into a scannable list. One ticket, one seat at the back. Chicago audiences talk to strangers more than most — a costume is a conversation starter you can borrow simply by asking about it.

3. A social format you can walk into alone. Trivia happens in nearly every neighbourhood bar on a Saturday, and the standard etiquette is that a team of four short of a fifth will take you. Language meet-ups and board-game cafés are the other reliable door. To be the host instead, City Quiz is free, needs no account, and gives you a scoreboard.

Staying safe on your own. Share your live location with a friend. Keep your drink with you, watch it poured, and eat something before the second venue. Stay in public, well-lit places and keep a first meet in a bar, never a home. Check the last CTA time for your line — or book your ride — before you are tired. In the US the emergency number is 911.

Say this to join a group. "I'm solo tonight — got room for one more?" · "Is anyone sitting here?" · "What's the move after this?" · "I'll buy the next round if you'll have me."
