Halloween alone 2026 · Lisbon
Halloween 2026 lands on Saturday 31 October, which means the whole city is out and nobody expects you to have plans. Lisbon is one of the easiest European capitals to do alone: small, walkable, and full of people who arrive in pairs and leave in groups. Here is how to spend the night well, on your own and not lonely.
1. The free walk (0 €, about 90 minutes). Start at the river and climb. Walk the waterfront from Cais do Sodré up through Baixa, then take the stairs into Alfama and stay high: the miradouros (viewpoints) are free, open, and busy with people watching the same skyline you are. Stay in the lit streets, keep your phone in a pocket you can feel, and you have the best free opening hour in the city. Finish near a metro or tram stop so the way home is short.
2. A cultural night indoors (free or a few euros). Saturday programming in Lisbon on 31 October is usually film, music or a themed museum evening; check the city's open-data feed on our hub and pick whatever starts before 21:00. Going in alone and standing at the back is completely normal here — nobody notices, and you will leave with a conversation if you stay for one drink.
3. A social format you can walk into alone. Pub quizzes, board-game nights and language cafés are the standard Lisbon setup, and they are built for strangers: you sit at a table assigned by someone else. Bring nothing but €5 for a drink. If you want to host instead of join, City Quiz gives you free questions and a scoreboard — "I'm hosting a quiz, come" is a much easier invitation to send than "let's meet up".
Staying safe on your own. Tell one person where you are going and share your live location. Charge your phone and screenshot your route home. Keep your drink in your hand; never leave it, never accept an opened one. Stay in public, lit, busy places and keep a first meet in a bar, not at someone's flat. The emergency number in Portugal is 112.
Say this to join a group. "I came on my own — is there room for one more on your team?" · "Is this seat taken? I'm new here." · "What's worth staying for after this?" · "Anyone up for a coffee after?"
Where to go next. Lisbon is a Tonight Solo city, and it also sits inside the wider Come Alone network of 250+ cities where going alone is normal. Open the city feed, pick one thing, and go.

A free screening of Júlio Silva's documentary on the famines that hit Cape Verde between 1934 and 1949, told through memories and testimonies from seven islands. A meaningful evening in São Bento.
