Free knitting and chat circle at Nippes library, Cologne

Stadtteilbibliothek Nippes

On Tuesday 27 October 2026 at 15:30 the district library of Nippes in Cologne hosts Nippeser Strickmamsellcher, a regular knitting and chatting group. The listing invites you to knit along, and the library page says the group meets every Tuesday and Friday. Participation is free and no registration is required, so you can simply walk in with your needles and wool, or ask what a beginner could try. A knitting circle is one of the easiest ways to meet people alone: the hands are busy, conversation is optional and starts naturally with the pattern or the colour of the wool, and the library is a warm place to spend an October afternoon. Plan about two hours, as the listing gives 15:30 to 17:30. «Nippeser Strickmamsellcher» Starts 15:30, ends about 17:30. Guided tour: Cologne in 1946/47, Hungerleben – Lebenshunger

Historisches Archiv mit Rheinischem Bildarchiv

On Wednesday 28 October 2026 at 16:30 the Historical Archive of the City of Cologne offers a free guided tour of its exhibition Hungerleben – Lebenshunger, about Cologne in 1946 and 1947. The war is over, but the city lies in ruins, housing is scarce and food is short. The tour follows how rubble was cleared, how families lived in ruins and emergency shelters, and what role church, culture and leisure played. A fictional figure called Käthe leads you through everyday scenes, and the curators explain how the sources were chosen and how single fates were woven into her story. Registration is required, by email to AnmeldungArchiv@stadt-koeln.de or by phone on 0221 / 221-24455. A guided tour is an easy plan alone, because a small group walks the rooms together and the story gives strangers something to talk about afterwards. «Führung durch die Ausstellung Hungerleben – Lebenshunger. Köln 1946/47» Starts 16:30, ends about 17:30. Source: Stadt Köln — Veranstaltungen (Open.NRW, Datenlizenz Deutschland – Zero – 2.0).

Guided tour of the K101 air-raid bunker in Ehrenfeld

bunkerk101

On Thursday 29 October 2026 from 10:00 to 11:30 there is a free guided tour of the K101 high bunker, known as the Körnerbunker, in the middle of Ehrenfeld in Cologne. The tour is titled At least a roof over our heads and opens the heavy doors of a building that many people only know from the outside. You see narrow corridors, massive walls and the rooms where people once sheltered from bombing raids, and you learn why the bunker was built and how it was used in the war years and afterwards. Places are limited and registration is required, by email to AnmeldungArchiv@stadt-koeln.de or by phone on 0221 / 221-24455. The tour is organised through the city's historical archive. A small guided group is an easy way to meet other local-history fans if you come alone, and the weekday morning timing suits retirees and shift workers. «Wenigstens ein Dach über dem Kopf» Starts 10:00, ends about 11:30. Host a walk & talk

No walk near you? Start one in a minute.

Create a free invite, share the link, and the people who say yes meet you at the start. This is the whole host kit:

  1. One easy meeting point — a station exit, a statue or a park gate anyone can find.
  2. 60–90 minutes, start and end time in the invite.
  3. A loop route so nobody is stranded at the far end.
  4. Finish at a café — the talk often continues sitting down.
  5. Walk at a pace for talking: if someone is out of breath, slow down.
